Hurt - You get your feelings hurt because someone you love or care for has done you a disservice and that feeling is always there (Inky I agree)

Mad = sometimes starts out as hurt, but the feeling gets better or goes away eventually

Mad is a compound emotion of fear and hurt. It's designed to protect us from further harm. If you've been hurt and there's no danger of getting hurt again you may go straight to sad. Unless you feel that you were wronged in the process.

Sorry you probably weren't looking for such a technical definition. Suffice it to say, it's difficult, some would even say impossible to go to mad without first driving through hurtville.
